Which kanna extract is right for you
Every extract is the same plant. What changes is the alkaloid ratio — and the ratio is what you feel. Listed calmest to brightest.
| Extract | Mesembrine | Use |
|---|---|---|
| REST | 50% | Calm, settled, evening |
| BLISS | 65% | Warm, body, open |
| LIFT | 80% | Bright, social, daytime |
| DROPS | 90% | Brightest ratio, liquid |
| LIFT XR | 150mg/g | LIFT concentrated |
Three alkaloids do the work in kanna, and they pull in different directions. Mesembrine is the bright, social one — awake, outward, easy in conversation. Mesembrenone is the calm one. Δ7-mesembrenone is the sedating one. The ratio between them is what you actually feel.
Kanna Drops are 90% mesembrine, 5% mesembrenone and 5% Δ7. That is the brightest ratio we make, and the furthest toward the daytime end of what kanna does.
Most kanna sold anywhere never states how much alkaloid is in the bottle, let alone the split between them. Two products at the same price can land completely differently, or not land at all. Ours is printed on the label and guaranteed as a minimum on every batch. In a liquid that matters more than usual, because there is no way to judge the strength of an oil by looking at it.
You also feel kanna the day you take it. It does not ask for six weeks of daily use before anything happens — one serving does its work that afternoon.
The format is the second reason people choose it. A serving is two to four drops from the dropper cap. Four drops is 160mg of oil, and carries 25mg of kanna extract — the same amount of extract as a full serving of our powders, without the scoop or the scale.
What to expect
Bright and outward. Awake rather than wired, and more inclined to talk than to sit quietly.
Onset is usually around 30 minutes — sooner held under the tongue, longer if you swallow it or take it with food. Effects last two to three hours.
A four-drop serving carries 25mg of kanna extract: 1.25mg of total alkaloids, 1.13mg of it mesembrine. Two drops is half of that, and a sensible place to start.
The dropper is the measure. Milligram precision would mean weighing the oil on a scale, and in practice nobody does that — you count drops and adjust between two and four.
A vial is 30 full servings where a 1-gram jar of powder is 40, at the same price. The format costs something.
Some people feel very little the first time. Try it once more at the same serving before deciding it isn't for you.
If you want the same daytime character as a powder, LIFT is 80% mesembrine at 40 servings a jar. BLISS is warmer and more body-centred, and REST is the calm, evening end.

How to take it
A serving is two to four drops. Four drops is a full serving — 160mg of oil, carrying 25mg of kanna extract, the same as a full serving of our powders. Two drops is the lighter end.
Start at two and go up on another day rather than adding more the same afternoon.
Under the tongue is the most direct route: hold it there for 30 to 60 seconds before swallowing. It also stirs into water, tea, coffee or juice, which is easier but slower to arrive.
Shake the vial before use. It tastes of mint and is faintly sweet from the glycerine, which is the main practical difference from the powders.
Testing
Every lot is tested by an independent laboratory: alkaloid profile by HPLC, plus screening for heavy metals, pesticides, residual solvents, and microbial contamination.

Sourcing
Grown in South Africa without pesticides or synthetic fertilizers. Sceletium falls under South Africa's Bioprospecting, Access and Benefit Sharing regulations and the Nagoya Protocol, because its use rests on Khoi and San traditional knowledge. Our grower holds the BABS permitting and the benefit-sharing agreement with the Khoi communities who hold that knowledge.
If it isn't for you
Send it back and we'll refund you in full. Return shipping is on you, but the product cost comes back regardless of how much of the vial is left.
Common questions
How many drops is a serving?
Two to four. Four drops is a full serving — 160mg of oil, carrying 25mg of kanna extract, which is the same amount of extract as a full serving of our powders. That works out to 1.25mg of total alkaloids and 1.13mg of it mesembrine. Two drops is the lighter end. There are 120 drops in a vial, so 30 full servings.
Can I measure it more precisely than by drops?
Only by weight, on a milligram scale — a four-drop serving is about 160mg of oil. Almost nobody does that, and the dropper is consistent enough that you don't need to.
How long before I feel it, and how long does it last?
Usually around 30 minutes — sooner held under the tongue, longer if you swallow it or take it with food. Effects last two to three hours.
How is this different from the powders?
The ratio and the format. Drops are 90% mesembrine, the bright alkaloid, where LIFT is 80% and REST is 50%. And a serving is counted in drops from a dropper cap rather than weighed or scooped, though a four-drop serving delivers the same 25mg of extract either way. All of them are 5% total alkaloids.
Can I put it in a drink?
Yes. It stirs into water, tea, coffee or juice without separating. Onset is slower that way than holding it under the tongue.
What does it taste like?
Mint, and faintly sweet from the glycerine base. The loose powders are bitter; this is not.
Does kanna contain caffeine?
No. There are no stimulants in it. Kanna Drops are Sceletium tortuosum extract in organic vegetable glycerine with organic mint, and nothing else.
Can I take kanna with an antidepressant?
Not without talking to your prescriber first. Kanna's alkaloids act on serotonin, and combining serotonergic substances carries a real risk. This applies to SSRIs, SNRIs, MAO inhibitors, tricyclics, lithium, triptans, tramadol, dextromethorphan, St. John's Wort, and 5-HTP.
Is kanna legal?
Kanna is not a controlled substance in the United States and is sold here as a dietary supplement. Regulations differ by country, so check your local law before ordering internationally.
Can I take it every day?
Many customers do. Some prefer to use it on specific days rather than continuously. We'd rather you find your own pattern than follow a schedule we invented.
How should I store it?
Sealed, upright, in a cool dry place out of direct sunlight. Keep it away from children and pets.
Why is the vial so small?
Because it's an extract, not a tincture you take by the spoonful. Four millilitres is 120 drops, which is 30 full servings of four.
