Which kanna extract is right for you
Every extract is the same plant. What changes is the alkaloid ratio — and the ratio is what you feel. Listed calmest to brightest.
| Extract | Mesembrine | Use |
|---|---|---|
| REST | 50% | Calm, meditative, evening |
| BLISS | 65% | Warm, body, open |
| LIFT | 80% | Bright, social, daytime |
| DROPS | 90% | Brightest ratio, liquid |
| LIFT XR | 150mg/g | LIFT concentrated |
Everything else we make is an extract — the alkaloids pulled out of the plant and concentrated into a powder or an oil. This is the plant, finely cut.
Kanna sold as plant material almost never states its alkaloid content, and raw herb varies from plant to plant and harvest to harvest. Two pouches that look the same can be very different.
This herb is fortified. The material is processed to remove its oxalic acid, then kanna's own alkaloids are applied back to it at a set concentration and blended through the batch. The result is 3% mesembrine by weight — 120mg in a four-gram pouch — with mesembrenone and Δ7-mesembrenone together under 1%. Potency is uniform across the whole pouch.
What to expect
The effect is biphasic. The amount you take changes the direction, not just the strength. A small serving is calming and physical. A larger serving is social — awake, outward, easy in conversation.
Kanna acts from a single serving rather than building up over weeks. Some people feel very little the first time.
As a tea. Onset is usually around 30 minutes — sooner on an empty stomach, longer with food. Effects last two to three hours.
The herb has a strong resinous smell. It carries into anything you brew or blend it with. Not everyone likes it.

How to take it
As a tea, use 25mg or more per cup and steep in hot water for five to ten minutes. In a herbal blend, a serving is 10 to 20mg. Four grams is roughly 200 servings.
These are small amounts. A milligram scale is the only way to measure them exactly. Without one you are estimating, so start at the low end.
Start with one serving. Most people don't need more.
More does not make the same effect stronger. It changes the effect.
Testing
Every lot is tested by an independent laboratory: alkaloid profile by HPLC, plus screening for heavy metals, pesticides, residual solvents, and microbial contamination.
Certificates of analysis
Certificates for the current lot are available on request.
Sourcing
Grown in South Africa without pesticides or synthetic fertilizers. Sceletium falls under South Africa's Bioprospecting, Access and Benefit Sharing regulations and the Nagoya Protocol, because its use rests on Khoi and San traditional knowledge. Our grower holds the BABS permitting and the benefit-sharing agreement with the Khoi communities who hold that knowledge.
If it isn't for you

Common questions
What does "fortified" mean?
Raw kanna varies in alkaloid content from plant to plant and harvest to harvest. This material is processed to remove its oxalic acid, then kanna alkaloids are applied back to it at a set concentration and blended through the batch, so the potency is uniform. The alkaloids are kanna's own and nothing foreign is added, but they are applied to the material rather than grown in it. If you want unprocessed kanna herb, this is not it.
How much should I use?
In a blend, a serving is 10 to 20mg. As a tea, 25mg or more per cup. Start at the low end. A milligram scale is the only way to measure these amounts exactly.
Does more of it feel stronger?
No. The effect is biphasic, so the amount changes the direction rather than the strength. A small serving is calming and physical. A larger serving is social. Going up moves you from one to the other.
How is this different from your extract powders?
An extract concentrates the alkaloids and discards the plant. LIFT is 5% total alkaloids at 40mg of mesembrine per gram, in a fine powder measured with a micro-scoop. This is plant material at 3% mesembrine by weight, for steeping or blending rather than taking as a powder.
What does it smell and taste like?
Strong and resinous. The smell carries into a tea or a blend. Slightly bitter — most people don't mind it and some do.
Does kanna contain caffeine?
No. There are no stimulants in it. This is Sceletium tortuosum plant material carrying kanna's own alkaloids, with nothing else added.
Can I take kanna with an antidepressant?
Not without talking to your prescriber first. Kanna's alkaloids act on serotonin, and combining serotonergic substances carries a real risk. This applies to SSRIs, SNRIs, MAO inhibitors, tricyclics, lithium, triptans, tramadol, dextromethorphan, St. John's Wort, and 5-HTP.
Is kanna legal?
Kanna is not a controlled substance in the United States and is sold here as a dietary supplement. Regulations differ by country, so check your local law before ordering internationally.
Can I take it every day?
Many customers do. Some prefer to use it on specific days rather than continuously. We'd rather you find your own pattern than follow a schedule we invented.
How should I store it?
Sealed, in a cool dry place, out of direct sunlight. Keep it away from children and pets.
